Mom's Chain Letter [Jul. 12th, 2009|02:21 pm]
I love my Mom, but she constantly forwards these chain letters from her clueless but well-meaning friends.

This one, however, was so poignant, I'm including it in a blog on Facebook as well as a post here.  Please take a moment to read it...

YOUR BANK ACCOUNT

A 92-year-old, petite, well-poised and proud man, who is fully dressed each morning by eight o'clock, with his hair fashionably combed and shaved perfectly, even though he is legally blind, moved to a nursing home today. His wife of 70 years recently passed away, making the move necessary. After many hours of  waiting patiently in the lobby of the nursing home, he smiled sweetly when told his room was ready.

As he maneuvered his walker to the elevator, I provided a visual description of his tiny room, including the eyelet sheets that had been hung on his window.

'I love it,' he stated with the enthusiasm of an eight-year-old having just been presented with a new puppy.

'Mr. Jones, you haven't seen the room; just wait.'

'That doesn't have anything to do with it,' he replied...

' Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my room or not doesn't depend on how the furniture is arranged .. it's how I arrange my mind. I already decided to love it. 'It's a decision I make every
morning when I wake up. I have a choice; I can spend the day in bed recounting the difficulty I have with the parts of my body that no longer work, or get out of bed and be thankful for the ones that do.

Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open, I'll focus on the new day and all the happy memories I've stored away. Just for this time in my life.

Old age is like a bank account. You withdraw from what you've put in.

So, my advice to you would be to deposit a lot of happiness in the bank account of memories! Thank you for your part in filling my Memory bank.  I am still depositing.'

Remember the five simple rules to be happy:

1. Free your heart from hatred.
2. Free your mind from worries.
3. Live simply
4. Give more.
5. Expect less.

A dietary decision [Feb. 26th, 2009|07:26 am]

Well, it looks like I'm officially transitioning to vegetarianism. I just bought my first box of Extra Firm Tofu (good for grilling, stir fry and sauteing) and am planning to try it out this weekend with a nice stir fry (zucchini, red bell pepper, onion, celery, shallot, edimame and tomatoes with rice). I've even found an interesting marinaded, baked tofu recipe for sammiches with tomatoes and alfalfa sprouts.

I do still plan to listen to my body when it says it wants a steak or a cheeseburger or a turkey or tuna sub, but meat is becoming less and less the star player in my day and more a nice break every once in a while. I'm learning how to keep up good levels of protien and calcium and won't cut out cheese or eggs. I'll have shrimp and tilapia and crab and lobster when my body wants it, too.

I'm already starting to feel a change in my energy and mental clarity. Not having so much cholesterol, fat, and preservatives in my diet is making me feel more awake and aware.

I'm still having a hard time fitting whole grains into my diet because granola is so expensive and I tend to over snack when I have it combined with vanilla yogurt (oh gods, is it delicious with blueberries, I can barely stop myself!).

Got myself a book on beginning vegetarianism and it's helping alot to assuage my fears about letting go of the emotional attachment to meat.

At this point, the weightloss isn't from a diet, it's from finally making the leap into an actual lifestyle change - and change feels REALLY good.

A turning point [Jan. 15th, 2009|09:54 pm]

Today marked a turning point with my blind flute student, Macy. She's chosen to go forward with an audition for OSU's School of Music as a Performance Major hopeful. I made contact with the flute prof at OSU and started a dialogue about how to modify the audition requirements - obviously, sight reading is out of the question - and concerns about her participation in ensembles (band or orchestra).

I was given the names of a few more faculty to speak with about what she can expect from the audition and beyond. I stated a wish for dual enrollment next year since Macy won't be graduating until 2010 and this was met with interest.

I need to open a line of communication with Macy's parents, too. This worries me as they have expressed disapproval in the past towards her getting involved in music. I'm hoping to counter with a double major of music and computer technology (her idea).

I don't want to seem as though I'm pushing her down this path, I want her choices to remain open. I'm eager to hear what OSU might have to say on her skills and if they are willing to work with her disability. I also don't want to raise her hopes too high. At every stage, I've been pragmatic in my advice and guidance.

As for Chaminade, she's on the edge of completing the memorization/absorption phase and nearly ready for the tweaking and injection of confidence phase. Her edge will come from the memorization of the piece which very few of her age (18) can manage. She's also polishing off an etude (exercise piece) she herself chose and is racking up quite an audition-approproriate repertoire. I'm hoping she'll be ready for the audition with OSU by late February.

She's been a practicing machine this past month. I saw her principal today when I signed in as a visitor and even he is shocked by her progress (lamenting that she doesn't work nearly as hard on her tests, LOL!). She isn't really aware of how far she's come, though. Just that she's very focused on getting these pieces of music firmly in hand.

Thank goodness I finally got through to her last night about shifting the focus back to the audition rather than endlessly discussing the nuances of the new flutes she's tried out from the different area music stores. First, the audition, then see what we can do about getting her a new flute (her disability qualifies her for some interesting scholarship monies).

I don't want my own history to color her potential or her sense of confidence, so I don't share many of my stories - triumphs or failures. I keep the focus on our work. Just today she's begun to push herself where I've had to push her in the past and that's QUITE the progress. Amazing what having a goal can do.

Yay for Valentine's Day! [Jan. 9th, 2009|05:15 am]
For some reason, I'm up at an ungodly hour and today is school, of course.  Just researched the new Godiva Heart Box for this year.  It's pretty, like a pillow or the draping of a dress at a point on the waistline.  This is the 7th year I've collected one and am happy with the design.

Having claimed Valentine's Day as MINE (for me, by me) last year, I'm now down with the concept of not expecting anything from anyone.  This year, I'll be spending the weekend at Winterstar and will be purchasing the heart box afterwards because SALE is a more than just a 4 letter word.

Mainly beause the parents can't go there without me, LOL!!!  Seriously, they called me up and asked if I'd like to go to Disney with them and I said "WHEN??"

The funny part is that I plan to go to Winterstar just before then so here's the projected travel schedule:
Drive out to Dellroy Friday, Feb 13th.  Drive back home Sunday, Feb 15th.  Fly to Orlando the evening of Sunday, Feb 15th, fly back into Columbus Thursday, Feb 19th, back to work Friday, Feb 20th.

WOOT!!!

Now I just have to ask my administrator for Monday off and to switch that Thursday for a Friday (all my teaching days move to Mondays and Thursdays at Mansion starting as soon as we get back from Winter Break).

Tigger behaving badly [Dec. 18th, 2008|11:40 pm]
Twice this week, Tigger has shredded the toilet paper.  I thought this was his way of telling me to change the litter, so I did.

I just walked in the bathroom a few moments ago and caught him contemplating the fresh roll I installed this morning.

My GOD, this cat has issues.  :::shakes head::::

Back on the grid! [Nov. 26th, 2008|04:30 pm]

The phone's dead.  It won't power up at all.  The mothership cannot send or recieve a signal.

Upon assessing the damage at the AT&T outlet here in Dayton, I was looking at:

A.) going without a phone until the replacement one could be shipped to me - not viable, my cell is my only contact because I don't have a land line.

B.) buying a crappy non-flip phone for $40 and not getting a replacement phone sent to me.

C.) buying a $150 or more flip phone and not getting a replacement phone sent to me.

D.) buying a $35 flip Go Phone at Best Buy, call AT&T about the bad phone and simply wait for the replacement phone to arrive because THANKFULLY, I'm still under warrenty until Jan 11th.

I'll take D for the win, Alex.

So, if you find your phone is on the fritz and you are still under warrenty, get yourself a Go Phone, slide in your SIM card, charge up the battery and you're back in business, baby!

Woot!

Is this appropriate? [Nov. 21st, 2008|07:03 am]

Sarah was told by a producer that there was a turkey slaughter going on behind her but she said it was no problem and they could do the interview right there.

Now, granted, turkey sandwiches need to come from somewhere, but I have serious issues about a political interview with a former vice presidential candidate being held in front of such an inappropriately gruesome scene.
